in the history of film, there have been many scenes where characters voice their anger at god or actively try to spite god. for example: the scene in devil’s advocate where al pacino (as the devil) sticks his finger in the holy water. however, all these scenes pale in comparison to martin sheen (as president josiah “jed” bartlett) in the west wing.
here’s a little background: mrs. landingham (the president’s secretary and close friend since his childhood) is killed in a car accident. the president reminisces back to the day when he first met mrs. landingham at his private school. his father is the headmaster and just before introducing him to mrs. landhingam, he tells jed that he found a cigarette butt in the church to which jed replies something to the effect of “people shouldn’t put out cigarette butts in the church”. back in the present, its the day of mrs. landingham’s funeral. there’s a tropical storm brewing in the capital and the president is giving an interview later in the day in which he will admit to having intentionally withheld his multiple sclerosis from the public. the services for mrs. landingham conclude at the national cathedral, the president is alone in the cathedral and asks the secret service to seal off the building. he walks toward the altar and starts talking to god (in english, with latin thrown in):
