in the history of film, there have been many scenes where characters voice their anger at god or actively try to spite god. for example: the scene in devil’s advocate where al pacino (as the devil) sticks his finger in the holy water. however, all these scenes pale in comparison to martin sheen (as president josiah “jed” bartlett) in the west wing.

here’s a little background: mrs. landingham (the president’s secretary and close friend since his childhood) is killed in a car accident. the president reminisces back to the day when he first met mrs. landingham at his private school. his father is the headmaster and just before introducing him to mrs. landhingam, he tells jed that he found a cigarette butt in the church to which jed replies something to the effect of “people shouldn’t put out cigarette butts in the church”. back in the present, its the day of mrs. landingham’s funeral. there’s a tropical storm brewing in the capital and the president is giving an interview later in the day in which he will admit to having intentionally withheld his multiple sclerosis from the public. the services for mrs. landingham conclude at the national cathedral, the president is alone in the cathedral and asks the secret service to seal off the building. he walks toward the altar and starts talking to god (in english, with latin thrown in):

tonight was a good night. here’s the cliffs notes version:

a few of us went up to the city for dinner and drinks for andrew’s birthday. we went to R&G Lounge in chinatown for dinner. i wasn’t expecting much in the way of vegetarian options but the vegetarian eggrolls and mushu vegetables actually worked out pretty well.

after dinner, we walked to kennedy’s irish pub and indian curry house (you read that right, pub and curry house). and to take the award for most random event of the year: i ran into an old friend from high school at kennedy’s–after 6 years, we run into each other in a pub/curry house of all places. many beers and shots of jaeger later, craig and andrew both got nice and drunk which was friggin hilarious. andrew’s quote of the night: “big pink balls of steel” (with accompanying arm gestures).

the walk back was just as good. craig is mighty wobbly and tells jenn “don’t let me fall, i’ve got a pretty face”. i damn near fell over laughing. this was followed shortly by raj repeating this sentiment as rick james from the chappelle show. i think craig almost fell over that time.

we finally amde it back to the garage in chinatown where we had all parked, ryan, donald, craig and andrew got a few slaps in on each other and we called it a night. good times i tell you, good times.

tech/site stuff24 Sep 2004 01:57 am

so i was checking my e-mail earlier and much to my surprise i had received an e-mail from xanga informing me that i had received feedback on my xanga. this is surprising considering all my substantive posts are on this page with nothing more than a link on my xanga page. some of you xanga users may remember the “wtf_batman” fiasco from a few weeks back where this guy had essentially comment spammed all over the place on xanga with nothing more than an unsavory ASCII picture on his site. well, appaently “Random_Account” has taken this to a new level. clicking the link in that comment proceeded to open hundreds of IE windows with actual unsavory pictures (not just ASCII art).

So after saving my computer from the brink of a meltdown, I decided its time to upgrade my anti-spamming software on this site. I upgraded to Moveable Type 3.11 last night (Moveable Type is my blogging software) and it doesn’t have official anti-spamming software but instead of immediately posting comments, comments are only posted upon approval by the author. this is a great new feature, but it doesn’t nip the problem in the bud. MT-Blacklist really fills the void. the great thing about MT-Blacklist is that it keeps a log of banned information and blocks the spam before it even goes for approval. after a great deal of trial and error, i able to upgrade to the newest version of MT-Blacklist and its awesome. MT and MT-Blacklist are now integrated and i can manage both from the same admin page (which is awesome).

i know this has been a very tech-heavy entry but i’m just so goshdarn proud of finally being up-to-date on all this stuff. on the bright side, expect my take on the new season of apprentice before the end of the weekend. why the long deadline? b/c i don’t even know where to begin.

3.11 are we in business?

now i don’t purport to know much about what’s “trendy” or “cool”. i usually don’t catch on to these things until well after they’ve passed, but if there’s one thing i do know, its da bling bling. not that i have any, but i understand the concept. which brings me to my point, i don’t know who arlen escarpeta is, but apparently he was the premier for “sky captain and the world of tomorrow” and really i think he could’ve aimed a little higher with his bling:

i’ve seen a lot of bling in my time (thanks mtv cribs) and i gotta say, this is the most uninspired bling i’ve ever seen. i mean, really, a VW pendant? is that his interim bling till he hits it big and gets his mercedes pendant? come on arlen, let’s keep it real–just get a gold plated daewoo pendant. not that i have anything against v-dubs but, come on, its a pendant on his chain. that’s just dumb.
