at the risk of reveling in “shameful joy” (that is to take pleasure in the misery of others), can i just say how glad i am that ken jennings lost on jeopardy today? yeah, after 75 shows and more then $2.5 million, the freakishly intelligent and incredibly annoying ken jennings finally lost. the first couple weeks was cool, its was ground breaking..nay, earth shattering…that someone could be this good. BUT THEN, everyday, it was more ken jennings. he was starting to draw his name more creatively, alex trebek had run out of small-talk to engage him in at the beginning of the show, and it really got boring.

sure, i’d check in now and then to see if he was still on, but other than that, i admit, i stopped watching. i just didn’t care anymore. but today, oh sweet jebus, today was awesome. as a final ode to his inevitable defeat, he got two daily doubles wrong and no one laughed when the answer was “nothing in spanish” and he replied “¿que es nada?”

awww, its ok. don’t be sad ken, it was bound to happen.

so i wouldn’t say the gum in the middle of a blowpop is worse than double bubble, but it sure is a close second.

yeah, that’s all i got.

so in an attempt to delay the agony of my work, i decided to look through the contents of my desk drawer. i wasn’t looking for anything in particular, i just wanted to see what i had in there. for the most part, there were no surprises. calculators, checkbook, a couple zip disks, a couple postcards (the one i got from pearl from the summer olympics in sydney is by far the best), etc. etc. HOWEVER, i did stumble upon a cache of cassettes. remember cassettes? they were those index card sized platic things that we all once used to record audio. with my job at the lab at davis, i never forgot what cassettes were, but i did forget that i had any. here’s what i found:

1. Soundtrack to the movie The Mission (if you haven’t seen this movie, for the love of jebus, go rent it. its an amazing movie.)
2. Book on tape to accompany Dos Mundos (my spanish text book from davis, i don’t think i’ve ever listened to this tape)
3. Godsmack (i think i just wanted to test my radio’s cd to cassette quality)
4. Rob Zombie’s Hellbilly Deluxe (eh, i dunno. whatever.)

and here’s the kicker:

5. Yanni’s Tribute (i bought it for my sister for christmas one year when i was in high school though i’m not sure why its been in my desk drawer for who knows how many years)

nothing like diggin up old artifacts. i feel like the british archaeologists that explored the pyramids–although i don’t plan on plundering anything. its all been relegated back to the drawer, i’m sure i’ll find them again a year from now and be surprised all over again.

COL. SANDURZ: Sir.

DARK HELMET: What?

COL. SANDURZ: Are we being too literal?

DARK HELMET: No, you fool. We’re following orders. We were told to comb the desert, so we’re combing it. Found anything yet?

WHITE TROOPER WITH COMB: Nothing yet, sir.

DARK HELMET: How about you?

WHITE TROOPER WITH 2ND COMB: Not a thing, sir.

DARK HELMET: What about you guys?

BLACK TROOPERS WITH AFRO-PICK: We ain’t found shit.

genius i tell you pure genius. that ranks right up with the plethoras from the three amigos.

so andy just brought to my attention the fact that everything except my profoundly insightful under siege dialogue has been pushed into the archives. well, here’s a couple things that should succeed in filling space:

1. not to beat a dead horse, but when did we become a country so afraid of everything? a couple weeks ago i wrote about the fine that had been levied against fox by the fcc and that people should actually take some responsiblity for their kids. so this week, i read an article that the same group that has been raising a stink about everything now wants ABC to be fined for showing saving private ryan on VETERAN’S DAY without bleeping out the words fuck and shit. even worse than that, there were at least 10 ABC affiliates that didn’t even show the movie because they were afraid of being fined. what kind of message is this? we can’t even honor our veterans without fines and fear? i don’t know what’s worse, having a kid hear the word “fuck” or having the kid see an edited version of history. kids deserve to see that war is not bleeped or blurred out, that war is itself profane. the article went on to talk about my favorite newly elected senator from oklahoma, who as a member of the house of representatives in 1997, called for NBC to be fined for showing showing full frontal nudity when it aired schindler’s list. though i suppose that’s a fair argument, because its like i told andy: nothing gets kids all sexed up like naked jews running in circles before they are thrown in a fire. (before anyone gets pissed, that was sarcasm)

2. i’m not cal alumni, but dammit, i appreciate anyone that gives stanford an ass-whooping. by the way for my fellow aggie alums, davis lost to portland state today in division 1-AA, part the Great West Football Conference. never heard of it? me either.

3. i know there was something else, but i forget what it is, if i think of it later, i’ll post it then.
