Tina Fey’s Brash Bid for Prime Time - New York Times
so i was watching some news show on thursday night and it was all about strange medical disorders. one of these disorders was something called foreign accent syndrome where people will suddenly begin talking with some kind of foreign accent. one guy had a stroke and gained some strange german/french accent but another lady didn’t have a stroke and just woke up sounding like she was from lichtenstein or something (i’ve never heard a lichtenstein accent but i imagine that’s what it would sound like). anyway, to get to my point, i was reading the above article and for some reason i found myself using a british accent in my head. the voice in my head was not my normal voice but rather some kind fo snooty aristocrat and i can’t think why that would be. the writing in the times is a little more formal than normal print media (i.e. they always refer to people as mr. and ms.) but this was the first time i read one of their articles as a foreigner. maybe i have “new york times mental foreign accent syndrome” or maybe we can shorten it to just “the paresh complex.” if you find yourself suffering from this affliction, don’t worry, its nothing a little electroshock therapy can’t cure.
